Calcium silicon alloy, often referred to as CaSi alloy, is primarily composed of calcium and silicon, with typical compositions ranging from 24% to 31% calcium and 55% to 65% silicon. This unique combination results in a material with a relatively low melting point—between 980°C and 1200°C—enabling it to be easily introduced into molten steel during refining operations.
One of the key characteristics of calcium silicon alloy is its strong affinity for oxygen and sulfur. This property allows it to act as a powerful composite deoxidizer and desulfurizer, effectively reducing non-metallic inclusions in the final product. Additionally, due to its high vapor pressure, CaSi alloy contributes to the modification of oxide and sulfide inclusions, improving the morphology and distribution of these compounds within the steel matrix.
Application of Calcicum Silicon
Steelmaking
Removes oxygen and sulfur. Modifies inclusions for improved steel quality and cleanliness.
Cast iron production
Improves machinability and refines grain structure.
Cored wire production
Commonly used as core material in casi cored wire for precise addition into molten metal.
Raw materials: Lime (cao): Source of calcium. Silica (sio₂): Source of silicon. Carbon (c): Usually in the form of coke or coal, which serves as a reducing agent.
Reduction process: The process is carried out in an electric arc furnace, where lime, silica, and carbon are added together. In the high-temperature environment, chemical reactions occur. The carbon reduces the silica to produce silicon:Sio₂ + 2c → si + 2co. Simultaneously, calcium is produced by reducing lime With carbon: Cao + c → ca + co.
Formation of calcium silicon: Once calcium and silicon are produced in the furnace, they combine to form calcium silicon (casi) alloy. The alloy is then tapped from the furnace.
Casting and cooling: After tapping, the molten calcium silicon alloy is poured into molds, where it solidifies. The solid alloy is then broken into smaller pieces for further use in steelmaking.
