What is Carbon Steel?




Carbon steel or plain-carbon steel is an alloy consisting primarily of iron and carbon, with carbon content typically ranging from 0.05% to 2.1% by weight. It contains a relatively small amount of other elements, such as silicon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur, which may be present in trace amounts. The carbon content in carbon steel determines its mechanical properties and can be categorized into three main types: low-carbon steel (0.02% to 0.3% carbon), medium-carbon steel (0.3% to 0.6% carbon), and high-carbon steel (0.6% to 2% carbon).

Carbon Steel Categories Based on Usage
Carbon Structural Steel
Carbon structural steel is a type of carbon steel with a carbon content of about 0.05% to 0.70% (some can be as high as 0.90%), mainly used for manufacturing engineering components and mechanical parts. Based on its quality and use, carbon structural steel can be classified into two categories: Plain carbon structural steel and high-quality carbon structural steel.
- Plain carbon structural steel
This contains more impurities, is lower in price, and is mostly used in applications where performance requirements are not high. Its carbon content is typically below 0.30%, and the manganese content does not exceed 0.80%. It has low strength but good plasticity, toughness, and cold deformation performance.
- High-quality carbon structural steel
This type of steel is purer, with fewer impurities and better mechanical properties. It can be used after heat treatment. Based on its manganese content, it can be divided into two groups: ordinary manganese content (less than 0.80%) and higher manganese content (0.80% to 1.20%).

Carbon Tool Steel
Carbon tool steel is mainly used for making cutting tools, molds, and measuring tools. Its carbon content is usually between 0.65% and 1.35%. According to different uses, carbon tool steel can be divided into carbon cutting tool steel, carbon mold steel, and carbon measuring tool steel.

Carbon tool steel has good processability, low cost, and is easy to forge and cut. Its hardness, wear resistance, and red hardness (the ability to maintain hardness when exposed to heat during work) are all excellent. Free-cutting structural steel is a type of steel to which elements like sulfur, lead, tellurium, or bismuth are added to make the steel more brittle and improve its cutting performance. These elements help the steel break into chips more easily during cutting, which increases cutting speed and extends tool life.
Classification and Application
Free-cutting structural steel can be divided into several types based on the added elements and their content, such as sulfur-added free-cutting steel, sulfur-phosphorus-added free-cutting steel, and lead-added free-cutting steel. It has a wide range of applications and is often used to manufacture various machine and instrument parts that do not require high mechanical properties, such as bolts, nuts, pins, shafts, pipe joints, etc. These parts require good cutting performance during the manufacturing process to ensure efficiency and precision.

How is Carbon Steel Manufactured?

Raw Materials and Ironmaking
The production of carbon steel starts with the extraction of iron ore, which is one of the primary raw materials. The iron ore is smelted in a blast furnace, where it is heated with coke (a form of carbon) and limestone to produce molten iron. During this process, impurities are removed, and carbon is added.
Steelmaking
Molten iron from the blast furnace is then transferred to a basic oxygen furnace (BOF) or an electric arc furnace (EAF), where it is mixed with scrap steel. Oxygen is blown through the molten iron to reduce the carbon content to the desired level.
