Flanges
A flange is a connecting element commonly used to join pipes or pipe components together or to secure equipment to a surface. Flanges can typically be round or square and are used in various industrial applications. A flange has two main components: a flange face and flange connection holes. The flange face is mounted onto the surface of the pipe or equipment to be connected. This surface usually has a flat or slightly raised gasket. Flange connection holes, along with other flanges or connecting elements, are used to connect flanges or to another surface. These holes are typically arranged in a circular pattern and are tightened with bolts or nuts. Flanges are commonly used in pipe systems to provide pressure or fluid sealing. They are also used in the assembly of industrial equipment to securely fasten the equipment in place.
Advantages of Flanges
Durability
Flanges provide resistance against pressure, temperature, and other forces within the system. High pressures or temperature changes between pipelines or equipment can be effectively accommodated due to the solid connection provided by flanges.
Ease of assembly and maintenance
Flanges allow for easy assembly and disassembly of pipes or equipment. When repairs, maintenance, or modifications are needed, the parts can be quickly separated and reassembled using flanges. This provides a significant advantage for production continuity and efficiency.
Flexibility
Flanges enable transitions between different pipe diameters, pressure classes, or materials. They are used at joints of different components or systems to bring together various elements and ensure compatibility.
Sealing
Flanges are used to achieve sealing at the joint. Gaskets or sealing materials at the joint prevent unwanted leaks of liquids or gases within the pipelines. This is important for safe operations and environmental protection.

Welding neck flange
The weld neck flanges, which are connected to the pipes by welding face to face, are connected like flat flanges in order to ensure complete tightness. The difference between weld neck flanges and flat flanges arises due to the type of connection found. Decoiler flanges. They are joined to the pipes found by welding forehead to forehead. Sealing, on the other hand, is provided in the same way as with flat flanges.
Slip-on flange
They are the flanges where the connection is provided by welding to the pipes located on the line both from the front and from the back. Decoupled flanges are connected to each other using bolt holes on them, and sealing is achieved by placing a gasket between the two flanges.
Socket weld flange
These flanges are used in the parts where pipelines are connected to machines. Because they can move on the line, they qualify as free flanges. After the free flanges are passed on the line, the collar is welded to the end of the pipe to prevent the flange from coming out of the pipe. There are no gaskets on the free flanges. Seal pressing surfaces are provided thanks to the surfaces located on the collars.
Threaded flange
Threaded flanges, which are mainly used in lines where the pressure is low, are usually used together with nipples that are welded to the end of the line. These types of flanges, which are used by being welded to the nipples at the end of the line, have the same structure as flat flanges in other parts.
Blind flange
The blind flanges used in the termination of the lines are used against the possibility that the lines will be extended and continued later. Like other flanges, they are connected to other flanges with the help of a gasket to ensure the termination of the line.
Materials of Flange
Carbon steel
Carbon-steel flanges are alloyed primarily with carbon. Carbon steel has a high hardness and strength that increases with carbon content but lowers ductility and melting point. Carbon steels range from mild and low, with 0.16—0.29% carbon to ultra-high carbon steel, with around 1–2% carbon. Steels with carbon content above 2% are considered cast iron.
Alloy steel
Just as you can enhance properties in plastics with additives, you can alloy steels with other elements to enhance the properties of your chose steel. Common alloys include molybdenum and chromium. Through different elements, you can increase a steel’ s strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and machinability.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel is alloyed with chromium in amounts above 10%. It’ s chromium that gives stainless steel a higher corrosion resistance than carbon steel, which easily oxidizes from air and moisture exposure. Stainless steel is ideal for corrosive applications that also require high strength. Different grades of stainless steels yield different outcomes.
Cast iron
When iron is alloyed with carbon, silicon, and other alloyants, the result is cast iron. Cast irons have good fluidity, castability, machinability, and wear resistance. They tend to be brittle to a degree with low melting points.
Aluminum
This is a low-density metal with medium strength. Malleable and ductile, it’ s more corrosion resistant than typical carbon and alloy steels. Aluminum is suitable for flanges that need both strength and low weight, such as for irrigation applications.
PVC
A PVC flange is low cost and durable. PVC pipe flanges also have the advantage of being both chemical and corrosion resistant. Additives can make PVC more flexible and softer. PVC flange connections can provide extra protection to underlying pipes. They’ re also popular for water-treatment processes, favored by the agricultural industry and used in domestic plumbing. Lightweight and easy to install, PVC flanges are perfect for PVC pipe systems.
Standard selection
Flange dimensions are typically defined by international standards. It is important to choose a standard that is suitable for the project or application requirements.
Pressure class and size
Flange dimensions are determined based on the pressure class and size of the pipeline being used. The pressure class should be selected to withstand the maximum pressure carried by the pipeline. The dimensions of the pipe, such as the outer diameter and inner diameter, are also taken into consideration.
Flange type
Flange dimensions are determined based on the type of flange being used. Different types of flanges, such as flat flanges, weld neck flanges, and threaded flanges, have different dimension standards. It is important to follow the specified standard dimensions for each type of flange.

Pipeline material
Flange dimensions are also determined based on the material of the pipeline being used. Different materials, such as steel, stainless steel, and carbon steel, have different dimension standards.
Tolerances
Tolerances are also considered in flange dimensions. These represent acceptable deviations within a specified range. Tolerances are important to ensure proper assembly of the flange and achieve a compatible connection. In general, flange dimensions are determined based on standards, pressure class, flange type, pipeline material, and tolerances. Considering these factors when selecting the appropriate flange dimensions is important to ensure a safe and compatible pipe connection.
Flanges can be welded or screwed on, depending on the type of flange and the piping system specifications. When choosing a flange type, consider pressure capability, pipe size, and intended application. Ring or slip-on flanges feature a central hole and slide onto the pipe end. The flange face extends beyond the pipe end and will be welded into place. Ring or slip-on flanges feature a central hole and slide onto the pipe end. The flange face extends beyond the pipe end and will be welded into place. Socket weld flanges are designed for tiny, high-pressure applications. The pipe is placed into one end, and a fillet weld is done to the exterior of the flange. To reduce weld stress, an expansion gap is necessary between the flange and the pipe. Weld neck flanges have a long, tapered hub that provides strength and enhanced stress distribution for use in high-pressure, sub-zero, or elevated-temperature environments. Blind flanges are flat, without a bore, and are used to complete a piping system.
Lap-joint flanges are similar to slip-on flanges, but they are used in combination, meaning that the flange does not come into touch with the medium in the pipe. These flanges do not require welding, thus they can spin freely to align with the matching flange. Threaded flanges are commonly used for smaller pipe sizes and do not require welding, making them a practical choice; nevertheless, they are not appropriate for piping systems with thin walls. Flanges also undergo different surface finishes to meet specific requirements. Smooth finish: Provides a flat and even surface suitable for applications where sealing integrity is essential. Serrated finish: Characterized by small grooves on the flange face, serrated finishes enhance grip and help maintain a secure seal, especially in high-pressure or high-vibration environments.
Different Face Of A Flange To Connect
Raised face (RF)
These flanges have an inner bore circle gasket and a tiny elevated portion around the bore. There are raised face flanges for various pressure and temperature ratings. Also, the most prevalent form of flange used in the oil and gas and chemical engineering sectors is RF flanges.
01
Male and female face (M&F)
To hold the gasket in place, these flanges have elevated parts and matching grooves. However, gasket retention happens on the female face, offering more precise positioning and a wider range of materials.
02
Tongue and groove (T&G)
The grooves and raised areas on these flanges mirror those on the male and female face flanges. This facilitates installation because the design encourages self-alignment of the flanges and creates a reservoir for gasket glue.
03
Flat face
As their name implies, flat face flanges have an even, flat surface. They also have a full-face gasket covering most of the flange surface.
04
Ring joint face (RTJ)
This face type, used in high-pressure and temperature applications, has a notch in which a metal gasket is placed to maintain the seal.
05
Repair and Maintenance of Flange
Flange cover is mainly used for flange connection and anticorrosion in all industrial. The head of flange of this product is used to product the flange surface (raised surface or ring joint). The double end studs and gaskets free from corrosion. The product is suitable for the 316 stainless steel and non-metallic (plastic), its manufacturing dimensions are 1/2-144 Inch ANSI, API and AWWA flange connection diameter. Flange sealing system combining with the flange packing can be used in harsh environment for protection.
The chlorinated rubber layer of sealing groove (temperature: from – 34.4°C to 82°C). ECH rubber pad (temperature: from – 34.4°C to 149°C) safety relief valve can release 5 psi. It is easy to install, detect and connect. What’s more, it is durable (not easily damaged). UV stable non- metallic materials can be reused. It is suitable for the temperature of 80 °C. Flange packing is a kind of unique solutions to solve the problem of corrosion for a long time. Flange packing is a kind of is a kind of composite polymer polarity based coating. Paste form makes it be used without pretreatment. The viscoelastic formulation allows the material to flow into space and gap, resulting in an excellent seal that can be against corrosion. Packing system because of its easy to use and save time and money. It provides long-term protection.
Properties: Flange packing can be excellent bonding to iron and steel, FBE (melting epoxy powder), polyurethane. Polyethylene high resistance is weathering / the temperature of anti-salt ranges from 51°C to 80°C filling the voids. The flange surface can be removed / reused without too much preprocessing, using manual or gas gun with flexible to inject gently. This can ensure that the ring slot is completely filled with CZ winding tape before sealing. E-2400/E2000 high temperature flange packing, it is suitable for 149°C. E-2400/E2000 high temperature antiseptic flange packing in the design is to protect the flange connection from corrosion at the temperature of 149°C. E-2400/E2000 is to use a kind of gel to protect the steel flange, bolt, pipe and structure from corrosion by a kind of non-electrolytic method.
High temperature flange parts often need to be flat high temperature sealed. If there is no additional sealing with good sealant in the separate pressure region, flange parts, affected by the pressure, will cause manufacturing inaccuracy or deformation, that is to say, in a separate pressure area, there will occurs leakage phenomenon under the pressure and thus need to plan repair. High quality high temperature flat sealing can make it in the standard applications of steam engine, gas engine, high temperature flange keep inert,, so it can bear the heat air, steam, water, light fuel oil and lubricant can be resistant to the crude oil and natural gas. It is a single component and paste sealants. It is suitable for the condition that has a high requirements for the temperature and pressure of smooth and flat sealing surface, flat high-quality sealing compound for on condition that is smooth and flat (butt joint) temperature and pressure requirements of high. Using the plaster knife or rubber scraper stands on dry surface. Because of the sealing products won’ t cure, and its consistency will be slightly change to maintain flexibility and elasticity, so there is no time requirements. It can be immediately put into the operation after the construction. If users need to repair the damage of high temperature sealing surface, they should cooperate with repair products.
