Product Introduction

321 stainless steel foil is a high-alloy austenitic stainless steel that offers excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion. It is a titanium-stabilized version of 304 stainless steel, with the addition of titanium helping to prevent carbide precipitation during welding or exposure to high temperatures. The foil form of this material makes it suitable for various thin-gauge applications where weight, flexibility, and corrosion resistance are crucial.

Properties

  • Chemical Composition: The main alloying elements in 321 stainless steel are chromium, nickel, and titanium. Chromium provides corrosion resistance, nickel enhances ductility and toughness, and titanium stabilizes the material against carbide precipitation.
  • Mechanical Properties: 321 stainless steel foil has good ductility and formability, allowing it to be easily rolled, bent, or stamped into complex shapes. It also exhibits good strength and toughness.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Due to its high chromium content, 321 stainless steel foil offers excellent resistance to oxidizing acids, chlorides, and other corrosive media. The addition of titanium further enhances its resistance to intergranular corrosion.
  • Heat Resistance: This stainless steel foil maintains its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures, up to around 900°C (1650°F).
  • Weldability: 321 stainless steel foil is easily welded using various welding methods, including TIG, MIG, and spot welding. The titanium addition helps prevent carbide precipitation during welding, reducing the risk of weld decay.

Applications

321 stainless steel foil finds applications in various industries where thin-gauge materials with excellent corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance are required. Some common applications include:

  • Chemical Processing: In the chemical industry, 321 stainless steel foil is used in equipment that handles corrosive chemicals, such as piping, tanks, and heat exchangers.
  • Aerospace: This material is suitable for aircraft components that require lightweight, corrosion-resistant materials capable of operating at high temperatures.
  • Automotive Exhaust Systems: 321 stainless steel foil can be used in automotive exhaust systems, particularly in high-temperature areas such as manifolds and turbocharger components.
  • Food Processing: It is also used in food processing equipment where corrosion resistance and hygiene are crucial, such as in brewing and dairy equipment.
  • Electronics: Thin gauges of 321 stainless steel foil are sometimes used in electronics applications, such as in flexible connectors and shielding materials.

Processing

321 stainless steel foil is typically produced through rolling and slitting operations. The raw material, usually a sheet or plate, is passed through a series of rolling mills to achieve the desired thickness. After rolling, the foil can be slit into narrower widths to meet specific application requirements. Additional finishing operations, such as polishing or annealing, may also be performed to enhance the surface finish or mechanical properties of the foil.
