Types of Stainless Steel Grades
1. Austenitic Stainless Steels
These are the most common and versatile stainless steel grades, known for their excellent corrosion resistance, ductility, and weldability. They are non-magnetic in the annealed state but may become slightly magnetic after cold working.
Grades:
304/304L (1.4301): General-purpose stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance.
316/316L (1.4401): Added molybdenum for improved resistance to chlorides and harsh environments.
321 (1.4541): Titanium-stabilized for high-temperature resistance.
310 (1.4845): High chromium and nickel content for extreme heat resistance.
Applications:
Food processing equipment, chemical tanks, architectural structures, medical devices.
2. Ferritic Stainless Steels
These are magnetic and contain a higher chromium content with little to no nickel. They offer good corrosion resistance and are more cost-effective than austenitic grades.
Grades:
430 (1.4016): Basic grade with good corrosion resistance and magnetic properties.
409 (1.4512): Heat-resistant and cost-effective for automotive exhaust systems.
444 (1.4521): High resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
Applications:
Automotive parts, kitchen appliances, and industrial equipment.
3. Martensitic Stainless Steels
Known for their high strength and hardness, martensitic grades are magnetic and can be heat-treated. They have moderate corrosion resistance.
Grades:
410 (1.4006): General-purpose martensitic grade with good strength and corrosion resistance.
420 (1.4021): Higher carbon content for increased hardness. Often used in cutlery.
440C (1.4125): Very high hardness and wear resistance.
Applications:
Knife blades, surgical instruments, and turbine blades.
4. Duplex Stainless Steels
A mix of austenitic and ferritic microstructures, duplex grades combine high strength with excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking and pitting.
Grades:
2205 (1.4462): Common duplex grade with excellent corrosion resistance.
2507 (1.4410): Super duplex for extreme corrosion resistance in harsh environments.
Applications:
Oil and gas industries, chemical plants, marine environments.
5. Precipitation Hardening (PH) Stainless Steels
Designed for high strength and hardness through a precipitation-hardening process, these steels are used in aerospace and high-performance applications.
Grades:
17-4PH (1.4542): High strength and corrosion resistance, widely used in aerospace.
15-5PH: Enhanced toughness compared to 17-4PH.
Applications:
Aerospace components, nuclear reactors, and high-strength fittings.
