Precipitation hardening steel, also known as age hardening steel, is a high strength alloy that undergoes a precipitation hardening heat treatment process to significantly improve its mechanical properties. Precipitation hardening steel is often used in applications that require a combination of high strength, corrosion resistance, and durability. They are available in both stainless and non-stainless forms and are widely used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, oil and gas, and military.

Precipitation Hardening Process

Solution Treatment

The steel is heated to a high temperature (usually around 980-1050°C), where the alloying elements dissolve into a solid solution. This is followed by rapid cooling or quenching, which "locks" the alloying elements in place.

Quenching

The steel is rapidly cooled (usually in water or oil) to retain the alloying elements in the solution. This creates a soft, malleable phase known as the "supersaturated solid solution."

Aging

The steel is then reheated to a lower temperature (typically around 400-650°C) and held for a period of time. During this phase, fine particles (precipitates) form within the steel matrix. These precipitates act as barriers to dislocation movement, dramatically increasing the material's hardness and strength.
