Pressure Vessel Flange

Pressure Vessel Flange

A pressure vessel flange is a critical component used in the construction and maintenance of pressure vessels. Flanges are designed to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment to form a pressure-tight and removable connection in piping systems.Pressure vessel flanges are essential for creating secure and maintainable connections in piping systems.

Product Introduction

Product Introduction

A pressure vessel flange is a ring-shaped mechanical part used to securely connect various components of a pressure vessel (cylinder, end caps) to the pipeline via bolts. A gasket is placed between the flange and the pipeline to form a sealing structure, preventing leakage of high-temperature, high-pressure, flammable, or toxic media. It is not an isolated component but a composite assembly consisting of a flange, gasket, bolts, studs, and nuts. Ensuring a tight seal is the flange's core function. Selecting the appropriate sealing structure for different operating conditions effectively mitigates the risk of seal failure caused by media corrosion, pressure fluctuations, and temperature changes, preventing safety accidents caused by leaks of toxic, harmful, flammable, or explosive media.

Common Pressure Vessel Flange Types

Weld Butt Flange: Named for its long, tapered hub structure, the weld butt flange evenly distributes stress between the pipeline and the vessel body. It boasts extremely high rigidity and load-bearing capacity, making it the preferred choice for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. Its sealing surface is machined with high precision, adaptable to various gasket types, and widely used in high-pressure vessels in petrochemical, nuclear power, and aerospace industries. It is particularly suitable for harsh conditions with design pressures ≥10MPa and temperatures >400℃.

Slip-on flanges: Slip-on flanges have a simple structure and low manufacturing cost. They connect to pipelines via fillet welds, making installation convenient. However, due to uneven stress distribution, their pressure-bearing capacity is limited, making them only suitable for medium-to-low pressure applications (design pressure ≤ 4MPa) and temperatures ≤ 300℃, such as connections between ordinary water supply and drainage, low-pressure steam pipelines, and pressure vessels. They are one of the most widely used flange types in light industry.

Socket weld flanges: Socket weld flanges use a socket structure. After the pipeline is inserted into the flange, it is fixed by a fillet weld. Their sealing performance is superior to slip-on flanges, and they occupy less space, making them suitable for small-diameter pipelines (DN ≤ 50mm), high-pressure hydraulic systems, and space-constrained applications. However, it should be noted that their welds are prone to incomplete penetration defects, requiring strict control of the welding process and enhanced non-destructive testing.

Threaded flanges: Threaded flanges connect to pipelines with external threads via internal threads, eliminating the need for welding. They offer fast installation and are suitable for applications where hot work is prohibited and frequent disassembly is required, such as pipelines carrying flammable and explosive media and connections for temporary maintenance equipment. However, threaded sealing surfaces are susceptible to corrosion by the medium, making them suitable only for medium-to-low pressure, low-temperature (≤200℃) operating conditions, and requiring extremely high thread machining precision.

Blind flanges: Blind flanges have no central bore and are mainly used to seal the ends of pressure vessels or pipelines, facilitating later maintenance and capacity expansion. Their pressure-bearing capacity is consistent with that of weld neck flanges of the same specifications. Selection must be based on the system design pressure and temperature. They are widely used for sealing the heads of reactors, storage tanks, heat exchangers, and other equipment, and are an indispensable sealing component in industrial systems.
