1040 steel plate is a medium carbon steel known for its balance between strength, toughness, and ductility. 1040 steel plate belongs to the AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute) 10xx series of carbon steels, where the first two digits (10) indicate a plain carbon steel and the last two digits (40) indicate a carbon content of approximately 0.40%. The relatively high carbon content gives it greater strength and hardness compared to low carbon steels such as 1018 or 1020, making it a popular choice for applications that require moderate toughness and wear resistance.

Heat Treatment

Annealing

Can be done to soften the steel for machining and forming. Typically, this involves heating the steel to around 800-850°C (1472-1562°F) and then slowly cooling it in a furnace.

Normalizing

Done to refine the grain structure and improve mechanical properties by heating the steel to 870-900°C (1598-1652°F) and air cooling.

Hardening

1040 steel can be hardened by heating to 800-850°C (1472-1562°F) followed by quenching in oil or water. This increases its hardness and wear resistance.

Tempering

After hardening, tempering at around 550-650°C (1022-1202°F) can help reduce brittleness and improve toughness.
