Metal Silicon Smelting Method process is accomplished through a chemical reaction called reduction. It is a process that reduces metal oxides into pure metals by a chemical reaction at high temperatures. The method involves the reduction of silica to elemental silicon using carbon as the reducing agent. Silicon dioxide and carbon are heated in a submerged arc furnace to temperatures above 2000 °C. The heated mixture reacts, yielding silicon and carbon monoxide. The silicon produced is in molten form and can be used in various applications.
What are the methods for smelting metallic silicon?
The carbothermal reduction method uses silica (SiO₂ ≥ 99%) as the raw material and petroleum coke, charcoal, and other composite reducing agents. After raw material pretreatment and precise ore blending, electricity is applied to a three-phase AC submerged arc furnace, generating temperatures of 1600-1800°C. Liquid silicon is produced through a carbothermal reduction reaction. After cooling, crushing, and classification, the silicon is discharged, resulting in industrial silicon with a silicon content of 95%-99%. For higher-purity silicon, further purification can be achieved through trichlorosilane hydrogen reduction or metallurgical methods.
