It possesses high tensile strength and elastic limit, and exhibits good dimensional stability after processing and forming, making it less prone to deformation.

1.Definition and Measurement

Hardness: Hardness refers to a material's ability to resist deformation, scratching, and wear. For stainless steels, hardness is often measured using the Rockwell Hardness Scale (HRC).

440C Hardness: 440C stainless steel can be heat-treated to achieve a Rockwell Hardness of up to 58-60 HRC, making it one of the hardest stainless steels available. This high level of hardness is due to its high carbon content and the ability to undergo heat treatment effectively.

2. Factors Contributing to High Hardness

a. Chemical Composition

Carbon Content: 440C contains about 0.95% to 1.20% carbon, which significantly contributes to its hardness. Carbon strengthens the steel by forming hard carbides within the matrix.

Chromium Content: With 16.0% to 18.0% chromium, 440C has a substantial amount of chromium that contributes to its hardness and corrosion resistance by forming a stable oxide layer.

b. Heat Treatment

Quenching and Tempering: The high hardness of 440C stainless steel is largely achieved through heat treatment processes. Quenching (rapid cooling) and tempering (controlled reheating) help to increase hardness while balancing other properties like toughness.
