The hairline (HL) finish is a popular surface treatment for stainless steel, characterized by its linear, brushed texture. Two main processes are used to create this finish: Dry Grinding and Oil Grinding. Both methods produce a consistent hairline appearance, but they differ in techniques, final effects, and applications.

1. Dry Grinding (Dry Polishing)

Dry grinding is to use of sand rollers (usually 2-4) to grind the surface of the stainless steel plate to form some continuous longitudinal lines.

The process generates heat and dust, requiring efficient cooling and dust extraction systems.

The dry grinding method is cheap and of good quality. It can meet the needs of most users and is usually used for decorative purposes such as home appliances and handicrafts.

2. Oil Grinding (Wet Polishing)

The oil-grinding wire drawing process builds upon the standard wire drawing method by incorporating emulsified grinding fluid. This results in a delicate, smooth, and shiny surface with strong oil resistance.

The process involves using a sanding belt for grinding. Due to the high cost of processing equipment, the overall processing cost is slightly higher than that of dry grinding. As a result, this method is commonly used in high-end applications, such as elevator interior wall panels and household appliance panels.

During oil grinding, a special polishing oil or coolant is applied during the grinding process.
The oil acts as a lubricant and coolant, reducing friction and heat generation.
