Where does ferrosilicon come from?
Ferrosilicon is an iron-silicon alloy whose core components are iron and silicon. It is primarily produced through industrial smelting, rather than direct mining from natural ores. Its source is essentially a combination of raw materials and smelting processes.
Core Raw Materials for Ferrosilicon Production
Ferrosilicon is composed of two components: iron and silicon. The raw materials must provide both elements separately, with strict purity requirements.
Silicon Source: Silica (quartz). Silicon is the second most critical element in ferrosilicon after iron. The raw material is primarily silica (chemical composition: silicon dioxide, SiO₂, purity required to be ≥98.5%), also known as quartz.
Iron Source: Scrap Iron / Iron Ore (Pig Iron)
Iron is primarily provided by scrap iron (such as scrap steel and scrap cast iron, purity ≥95%) or low-impurity pig iron (smelted from iron ore). Reducing agent: Coke (or charcoal, petroleum coke). During the smelting process, a "reducing agent" is required to reduce silicon dioxide (SiO₂) in silica to elemental silicon (Si). The mainstream reducing agent is metallurgical coke.
In summary, ferrosilicon is not derived from naturally occurring minerals. Instead, it is an industrial alloy made through high-temperature reduction smelting in submerged arc furnaces using silica (silicon source), scrap iron/pig iron (iron source), and coke (reducing agent). Its industrial distribution is highly dependent on the availability of raw materials and energy.
